Without a charge controller a solar module can overcharge
and ruin a battery. Charge controllers are also a relatively inexpensive
component of an overall system.
In some cases if your battery is large and your
solar module is small you do not need a charge controller.
How do I know if I need a charge controller?
A general guideline to follow is you don't need
a charge controller unless you have more than five watts of solar
for every 100-amp hours of battery capacity. For a system with less
than 5 watts for every 100-amp hour battery, the PV panel size system
would be considered a trickle-charge -meaning the panel
is merely replacing the charge that is naturally being lost from
the battery.
