A battery is used to store the electricity generated
by your solar panels. Batteries can be divided into two different
types - deep-cycle batteries and automotive or shallow-cycle batteries.
Deep-cycle batteries are designed to cycle repeatedly.
This means they can be charged, drained and re-charged again and
again. This is the kind of battery used with solar systems. These
batteries are designed to provide a steady amount of power over
long periods.
An automotive battery can only provide a burst of
current for a brief amount of time (like to start your car). Automotive
batteries are not designed to run loads for prolonged periods. This
is why vehicles have an alternator to power automotive electronics
and recharge the battery.
